Graduates earn the same Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence degree awarded by the University of Colorado Boulder as students in the on-campus program. The diploma does not mention Coursera or online study.
This degree prepares graduates for advanced AI and machine learning roles such as Machine Learning Engineer, NLP Engineer, Applied Scientist, and other technical positions focused on intelligent systems and AI-driven product development.
Yes. The program is included in the University of Colorado Boulder’s institutional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission.
Yes. Learners can begin in the non-credit experience, complete coursework before committing to the degree, and later upgrade to the for-credit version during an open enrollment period. See how it works.
The curriculum is designed for deep specialization in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Students build expertise in areas such as neural networks, deep learning, generative AI, reinforcement learning, computer vision, NLP, responsible AI, and the mathematics and statistics that support modern AI systems.
Admission is performance-based. Students earn admission by completing a three-course pathway for credit and earning at least a B in each course. Recommended preparation includes a strong foundation in computer science, working knowledge of at least one programming language, and advanced preparation in linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability, and statistics.
The program is delivered 100% online with lecture videos, hands-on projects, and regular interaction with faculty and peers. It is designed to be completed in 12 to 24 months, though students have up to eight years to finish. Workload is about 5 to 8 hours per week per credit hour, and many students complete the program in about two years by taking up to three courses per session after their first term.
Students who successfully complete the degree are welcome to attend the on-campus graduation ceremony.
Total tuition is $15,750, based on $525 per credit hour for 30 credit hours. The program uses a pay-as-you-go model, so students pay only for the courses they take in the upcoming eight-week session rather than paying the full degree cost upfront.
Students may apply up to six graduate-level credit hours from eligible CU degree programs on Coursera as elective credit toward the MS-AI, subject to academic rules. All courses must be graduate level, offered on Coursera, and meet all applicable academic standards. This includes all courses offered by the ME-EM, MS-DS, MS-CS and MS-EE programs on Coursera.
Students may also earn an Artificial Intelligence Graduate Certificate on the way to the degree when certificate requirements are met. To earn a CU graduate certificate on Coursera, you must declare your certificate via your student Buff Portal and maintain a cumulative certificate GPA of 3.00 or higher. Individual certificates may have additional requirements.
The program is open to students around the world except in locations restricted by U.S. sanctions. English-language proficiency tests are not required for admission to the pathway because entry is based on course performance rather than a traditional application process.
