The course explains customer specifications, basic boiler design inputs, heat duty, efficiency, and combustion calculations, along with guidelines for furnace selection, coal pulverizers, and heating surface design.

Detailed coverage is given to pressure part arrangements for stoker-fired, fluidized bed, circulating fluidized bed, and pulverized coal–fired boilers. Key components such as economizers, steam drums, water walls, superheaters, reheaters, headers, and desuperheaters are explained with construction and flow paths. The specialization also focuses on boiler supports, buckstays, materials, metallurgy, insulation, refractory, and applicable codes and standards.
