I did not take the courses in order so this was the last course I too. I like that it had fewer lectures and more hands-on activities. I even learned about a different website.

The assignments are really fun and put the videos into practice very efficiently! The only thing that troubles me is sometimes the "design language" is too unfamiliar for beginners.

Overall the course was good, but if you are taking the entire specialization it can feel redundant at times. The heart of imagemaking in a classroom setting is critique, and through crit art students learn learn a great deal from one another. I have gone through formal art school and provided thoughtful comments in my peer reviews, but others did not always do the same. This class would be more successful if learners in the same cohort were broken up into smaller groups to critique one another's progress throughout the entire course. Those of us truly dedicated to the process would really benefit from meaningful access to our peers.

If you enjoyed the first course in this specialization, you'll enjoy this course, as it's much of the same. The class is more of an independent studio session rather than an instructional course. If you're looking to work with a single visual subject for a few weeks (but lack the discipline or knowledge to do so on your own), this course will benefit you. If you're looking to save money, perhaps stick to just the first class in the specialization (or take this one if you're only interested in image-making).

Nice course, would have liked to be able to work with different subject matter for various exercises to mix it up a little. i.e. Not just using the same idea.

I enjoyed this course. A couple of feedback items: 1) assignment due dates are scheduled too close to one another. 2) Other students that graded my assignments just filled feedback fields with "ok" or "good" -- I wonder if there is a way to encourage others to provide real and constructive feedback? 3) For our third assignment, when I was grading assignments of others, I was given assignments of students from 2020, which seemed strange to me. I was expecting to grade work of students in the current class of 2025. On top of that I had to flag works of 5 of those students from 2020, because their submission was exactly the same, with same images of cats and same verbal answers.

Overall the course was wonderful. I wish I personally would have had more access to art supplies or experience with computer programs ahead of time-doing so would have made this course more rewarding and engaging for me.

If you've completed the first course in this specialization, then this is a repeat of a lot of the same information. I didn't find the teaching style very effective either, though it may work better for others.

Good course if you are driven and can teach yourself. I like the instructor's approach. I'm giving 3 stars only because I was looking for something more about techniques..

I didn't like the rythm, the way that the tasks were passed. Many times it was a bit confusing.

This was a really confusing class to take. First, many imagemaking techniques were suggested for trying out without much guidance. Then, we suddenly had to choose just a few images for use in later assignments. The requirements for the assignments did not always seem to match the requirements of the review criteria or expectations as laid out by staff members in the assignment discussion boards. Many of the assignments I received did not follow the guidance or even used stock images throughout their works, in plain violation of the spirit of this class. I personally blame this on the weak instructions that feel like they turn this class into more of a certificate mill, as students don't know what they should or should not be doing. Also, most of the reviews of my submissions just said "good" or something similar which is not constructive criticism.

This was my least favourite course in this specialization. The theory was explained in a very unclear manner, the instructor starts a sentence then finishes with something entirely different. No clear explanations of terms. And the peer reviews are practically non-existent. People either give a few words of "review" or nothing at all. Can't believe I actually paid to get reviews saying "good" and "n/a". And in the forum the staff keeps saying they will work on this, looking back they have been saying this for over a year without any change. You're better off spending your money elsewhere.

This course was tough to get through. I felt that the assignments retreaded information that was covered during the first course in the specialization. Most of the assignments were too interpretive and didn't offer enough concrete instruction to make me feel like I was learning something useful. I was hoping to dive deeper into design elements to improve my compositions, but this course was more focused on making art, regardless if it was "good." If this wasn't included in the specialization, I would have skipped it.

This course is mostly a repeat of the imagemaking and composition sections of the Introductory course: Fundamentals of Graphic Design. However, I found the content less informative , constructive, and applicable than what I learned in the first course. What would have been more helpful is expanding on noticing the denotative and connotative elements of images such as physical quality like lines, textures, textiles, etc. and applying them to context to evoke or portray specific images.

This is the weakest of all the graphic design courses offered in this specialization. The assignments can be done in 10min or less and require very little effort or creativity. The content is basic with videos explaining what a book is and how to rotate or resize objects. If possible I would recommend skipping this module.

Very repetitive information (assignments and material were almost identical to other courses in the same specialization), and at times painfully slow.

I did not enjoy this course. It was already mentioned in the Fundamentals of Graphic Design course, and Michael Worthington — the instructor there — taught it much better than Gail Swanlund, who leads this one. Even though the Fundamentals course was just introductory, it was more effective and far more useful. I didn’t find anything beneficial in this course, and I had to grit my teeth and endure the frustration throughout. First of all, the instructor provided almost no valuable information. She simply read through the material without offering any fresh insights or anything truly helpful. Second, many of the provided links — especially the readings in Module 2 — were broken, often leading to 404 Not Found errors, which was incredibly irritating. Third, I couldn’t understand the purpose of the assignments. They were too difficult, lacked clear objectives, and felt pointless — just a waste of time. While the course claimed “there’s no right or wrong,” my peers rated my work unfairly, with shallow and uninformative feedback, effected other people's scores. The assignment guidelines themselves were vague and confusing. Fourth, the course felt like it was designed for children, yet the assignments were on a completely different level — overly complex and inconsistent with the tone of the lessons. In short, I did not like this course, "Introduction to Imagemaking". It is the weakest course in the entire Graphic Design Specialization. If it weren’t required to complete the certificate, I swear I would have unenrolled immediately.
